FOR MARRIAGE CEREMONIES

In Mexico, only civil marriage is recognized as legal. Persons wishing to do so may also have a religious ceremony, but it has no legal effect and does not replace the legal binding civil marriage. Four witnesses must be present at the legal ceremony, and they each must have valid identification (passport).

All documentation, except passports, need to be in Spanish. Foreigners marrying foreigners in a civil ceremony need a passport, a tourist permit, plus:

  • Marriage Application Forms: attained from the local registry office in Mexico
  • Full Passport: original and copy, valid for at least six months
  • Travel Permits: completed at the port of entry
  • Birth Certificates: need to be certified and translated
  • Divorce Decree / Death Certificate (if applicable)
  • Blood Test Results (get in Mexico)
There are no residency requirements for foreigners. For a foreigner planning to marry a Mexican citizen, however, there are additional requirements that can take several weeks to process. Just ask your Wedding Coordinator for more details.

FOR VOW RENEWALS:

  • Original Wedding Certificate required

The preceding legal information is provided as a guideline reference only. Check with the state, county and/or municipality of your wedding site for more detailed and current information. Check with your home state about its requirements for a blood test, license and other documents. A marriage license from your home state may not be valid for a ceremony performed in another state, territory or country. A marriage performed in another state may not be recognized by your home state, unless specific requirements are met.
