Did you know the city of Winchester changed hands over 70 times over the course of the war? George Washington's Office Museum Our first President used a little log building as a military office from September 1755 to December of 1756 while Fort Loudoun was being constructed at the north end of town. These walking tours take you around several blocks of the historic "Lower Town" section of Harpers Ferry to view a number of sites and buildings that have had ghostly phenomenon reported in, or around them, over the years. It features jogging trails, a three-acre fishing lake, and expansive playgrounds. Many folks may not realize this, but Virginia has been producing some of the best tasting wines in the country for over 300 years. Tasting can be enjoyed at more than a dozen wineries. Knowledgeable rangers guide you along paved walkways that wind through the cathedral-sized rooms with soaring ceilings, towering columns and breathtaking stalactites, and then stop to gaze into mirror-perfect pools.
Museum of the Shenandoah Valley This unique venue includes a historic house dating to the eighteenth century, six acres of spectacular gardens, and a museum designed by internationally recognized architect Michael Graves. Old Courthouse Civil War Museum A historic building with graffiti from both Northern and Southern soldiers, it also houses a nationally recognized collection of over 3,000 Civil War artifacts. Take Skyline Drive along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains through the woods and past spectacular vistas, then hike in the shade of oak trees along the Appalachian Trail. This private university with an enrollment of approximately 3,400 students in more than 80 programs is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum Touch, crawl and see – kids will have fun while discovering the natural world around them. Stonewall Jackson Headquarters This Hudson River Gothic Revival style house, a Virginia and National Historic Landmark, was used as headquarters by General "Stonewall" Thomas Jackson during the winter of 1861-1862. The 20+ acre park is home to over 200 mammals, birds, and reptiles, which represent more than 50 species of wild animals from all over the world. Feeding of the more gentle creatures, such as deer, sheep and goats, is allowed. Shopping Loudoun Street Pedestrian Mall Enjoy an eclectic mix of fine shops, galleries, and restaurants in historic Old Town Winchester. The mall is lined with 18th and 19th century buildings.
Sports & Amusement The property offers 18 holes of natural beauty and is the only golf course in America with seven holes set upon the Shenandoah River, providing over three miles of unobstructed river vistas. The course is distinct in its abundance of rock, water and orchards. Its elevation variance and course length stretches from the shortest of 3,800 yards to the longest of 7,200 yards. Local Events MAY For more than 80 years, this six-day festival has offered a series of more than 30 events that includes: band competitions, dances, parades, circus, a 10K race, the coronation of Queen Shenandoah, firefighters' events, and celebrities. OCTOBER Hot Air Balloon Wine and Music Festival For well over 10 years this three-day event has offered breathtaking balloon rides, live music and tasting from area wineries.
