Legal Requirements for Weddings
Dutch St. Maarten allows a wedding ceremony when a couple has been on the island for at least one week.

Getting Married on Dutch St. Maarten

Request for marriage authorization must be submitted at least 14 days before the ceremony, conducted by the Registrar.

The following notarized original documents must be submitted to the Registrar:

  • A certified birth certificate for both bride and groom
  • A declaration of marital status
  • Address of both parties
  • Proof of duration of stay on St. Maarten
  • If widow(er), a death certificate
  • If divorced, a divorce certificate or a final judgment decree
  • Foreign nationals must present a valid passport
  • Names of parents, maiden name of mother including place of birth and birth date
  • Professions of bride and groom and of parents

  • Six witnesses are required if the marriage is performed outside of the Marriage Hall in Philipsburg. Two witnesses are required if the marriage takes place in the Marriage Hall. Foreign witnesses must present a valid passport or a birth certificate with a picture I.D.
  • Original documents in languages other than Dutch or English need to be translated into Dutch.
  • Cost for foreign marriages is US$275.55 including civil ceremony, marriage book, stamps and certificate.
