Legal Requirements and Marriage Procedures
Because St. Thomas is a U.S. Territory, it is easy for citizens of the United States and Canada to obtain a marriage license. There is no stay to meet a residency requirement or blood test needed before getting a marriage license. However, there must be a signed, notarized and authorized application to the Territorial Court - which your Wyndham Wedding Coordinator will arrange for you. Please note however, that this can take a minimum of seven working days to obtain the marriage license and must be arranged before you arrive on island. Follow these steps to obtain your marriage license, please allow a minimum of two months in order to ensure receipt.
  1. Click here to Download the Marriage Application (PDF) and complete it. The Marriage Application must be submitted to the Territorial Court of the USVI at least one month prior to the ceremony date (see below for mailing address).

    Marriage Application Tips:

    • "Parents"- State both parents' names
    • "Mother's maiden name"- For both Bride and Groom
    • "Place of birth"- For both parents
    • Previous marriages - Certified copy of divorce or death certificate must accompany application
  2. The following must accompany the Marriage Application:
    • A letter detailing arrival and departure dates, location of stay (Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort), On-Island contact: (Lorna Richardson, Wedding Coordinator, Wyndham Sugar Bay)
    • A certified check or money order for $100.00 ($50.00 - Non-refundable for application fee and $50.00 - Marriage license fee)
  3. Mailing the Application
It is recommend that you send this information via Federal Express or Express Mail in order to have a tracking number to confirm its receipt. You also have the option to send it regular mail. Make copies of the information that you send to the court, and bring them with you to St. Thomas.

    Mail to:
Territorial Court of the Virgin Islands

When You Arrive in St. Thomas
Once in St. Thomas you will need to pickup your license at the Territorial Court in Downtown, Charlotte Amalie. NOTE: If time allows, upon arrival, stop by the court on the way to the Resort from the airport. The application will need to be notarized at the Territorial Court. There is no physical exam or blood test required. There are no restrictions regarding arriving on island prior to your ceremony. Keep in mind you must go to the courthouse for the signing of the license. It is open Monday-Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm, and Saturdays from 10:00am to 12:00 Noon. Closed on Holidays. (There are 20 legal holidays observed in St. Thomas. Verify in advance with the Wedding Coordinator, that your dates are not in conflict with one of these holidays.)

The preceding legal information is provided as a guideline reference only. Check with the State, County and/or Municipality of your wedding site for more detailed and current information. Check with your home state about its requirements for a blood test, license, and other documents. A marriage license from your home state may not be valid for a ceremony performed in another state, territory or country. A marriage performed in another state may not be recognized by your home state, unless specific requirements are met.
