“A mixed bag...”

  , Ventura
Let's start with the good: The location here is amazing. You're right across the street from the San Diego Maritime Museum, which is literally a floating museum consisting of boats and submarines you can walk through and explore. The USS Midway is a short walk down the street. The Gaslamp Quarter is a longish walk, but a quick cab ride away, and Little Italy is easily within walking distance. It's convenient to the freeway. There are some fantastic restaurants and a pub located inside the hotel. The pool looked nice, the place was clean, and the price was right. The not so good: First and foremost, parking. Self-park was $24 per night and there was NO parking available - we were directed to a red curb labeled "NO PARKING" and "MAINTENANCE ONLY" and told it'd be okay to park there - apparently "Z," the parking attendant, decided this meant we were valet parked and they tried sneaking a $36/nt valet charge in on the bill. Not cool. Speaking of not cool, the rooms were hotter than outside. Air conditioning is apparently just for show, and the thermostat was turned down to 61 degrees without any discernible change in temperature. This made it extremely difficult to sleep, especially when coupled with the paper-thin walls and windows (nothing says good night's rest like a foghorn every 5 minutes all night, the backup warning beeps of the airport shuttle, or the drunks leaving Ruth Chris). The first night we arrived, our King Bayview room had been given away and we were instead given a double-bed in a handicapped accessible room. Didn't make a fuss because it was late and we had a long drive, but that was absolutely not cool. Overall, it was an okay stay. The rooms were comfortable and well equipped, if a bit outdated. The location was great. Would I stay here again? Maybe - management needs to look into better soundproofing the street-facing rooms, and for gods sake do something about the price of parking.
