“Not a destination hotel”

  , Salem
Our plan was to get there after work, Unwind at the Hotel bar, go have dinner in the restaurant, then watch the celtics game at the sports bar. Low key, relaxing, simple all in one Stacation. We checked in, looked at the room and thought NICE! Then we tried to take advantage of the amenities. My wife ordered a Cape Codder at the sports bar where we were the ONLY patrons. My wife usually orders her drinks weak. She didn't ask for a weak drink this time because we were already "Home". Half way through, she looked at me and said "There is nothing in this drink". I finished my beer and we went to the other bar. I tried to order a second Sam Winter when I was told informed that "this bar doesn't have Sam Winter, you have to go to the sports bar". I ordered an Amstel Light and we took a look at the menu. The "New" Menu had very little diversity. Options were a $35.00 Delmonico Steak, A few less expensive cuts of beef and five or six other entries. None of which piqued my interest. The high prices were not an issue, I just wanted something "Interesting". My wife ordered an appetizer since she just had a "drink". Risotto with wild Mushrooms. It was a small bowl filled with a Pasty substance and Mushrooms. for all I know, our appetizer was exactly the way you make Risoto with wild mushrooms. The point is that we ordered it because we really had no other options. SPirits broken, we got in the car and drove across the bridge to Chili's where we watched the first half of the Celtics Game, had a plate of Chips and salsa and split a rack of ribs (at that point we had given up on having a special evening). We returned to the room to watch the rest of the game only to find out that the room did not have the station that carried the Celtics game. we felt like we were denied at every turn. All this being said, The room was spectacular, the people were super polite. Everything was clean. If I were a businessman traveling to Mass and needed to stay in Andover it would have been fine. But as someone looking for a nice relaxing night away, the place just doesn't make sense on so many levels. Simply put (and lowering your expectations as far as possible&.) Why don't they offer the same beer at both bars? Why are there only 8 things on the menu and four of them are grilled Beef? Why are there no typical appetizers? It is a very nice place to sleep if that is all you are looking for. But then so aren't most hotels.
