“Never before have I been charged for early check in when a room was ready”

  , Birmingham
I recently stayed at this hotel for a week long meeting, the RSNA. I have stayed at this same hotel the same week (first week in December) every year for the past 20 years, from its time as the Executive Plaza, through renovations to become Hotel 71, to threats of being sold as condos when the elevators did not work the entire week, to most recently the change to a Wyndham property. I would say I am a loyal customer. This year, when I arrived at 9:30 am, my room was ready. I was told that an "early check in fee" would apply if I checked in before 10 am. Thirty minutes! Thirty dollars for thirty minutes when the room was ready, and when they undoubtedly would be busier at the front desk later as the morning I arrived was the day before the start of the meeting. When I voiced my concern that I had taken an early flight an arrived around the same time every year and had never before been charged this fee (even though it was a Wyndham property the year before), the front desk personnel replied that there was nothing they could do. I asked for a manager and was told there was no one with the authority to waive the fee. I tried to ask if this was a Wyndham policy or something special for RSNA week. There was no explanation. I am a Wyndham rewards customer, but that did not make a difference either. I did not want the hassle of getting my things from the valet later in the day during the crush of people checking in, and since the room was ready I checked in and paid the fee. The hotel is modest but has some features that I find desirable for the purposes of being in Chicago for the week of RSNA. The hotel is ideally located for shopping and getting to the meeting at McCormick, and the views on the river side are spectacular. For the past several years there has been a restaurant and a bar that are open (for years there was not....). It is no frills, but comfortable. This year, besides the surprise early check in fee, other inconveniences included that the construction crews renovating the 6th or 7th floor continually occupied two of four guest elevators (there is a service elevator), and so getting to the upper floors was delayed, and the front entrance was nearly blocked with scaffolding for exterior renovations. I do not know if I will stay there again.
