“Exceptional value in Chinatown/LES”

  , Ottawa, Ontario
My husband and I spent 6 nights at the Wyndham Garden Chinatown and were very happy with our stay. In the past we've stayed in Midtown but we were thrilled to stay on the LES: MUCH better value and zero tourists. THE HOTEL: Modern, recently built, immaculately clean. WIFI is fast, reliable and FREE. Service was courteous and prompt if not overly friendly. We parked our car for the week & were satisfied with the nightly rate offered through the hotel. We skipped the lobby bar and hotel restaurant (so many other options in NYC) but the lobby bar always had a few people enjoying a drink. On a Thursday night we tried the 18th floor rooftop bar because we were too tired to go elsewhere. Great view but strong odour of stale cigarettes, terrible music (One Direction & other teeny bop pop) that staff kept changing mid-song, sickly sweet drinks at prices that rivaled seriously good cocktail lounges ($14ea), and the place was EMPTY. Don't go. THE ROOM: We reserved a 16th floor queen and had jaw-dropping views of the Freedom Tower, financial district, Manhattan bridge & Brooklyn bridge. Room was quite small but totally acceptable for NYC (this isn't Vegas!) and we had enough room for our small/med suitcases and all our shopping bags. Room was stylish and well laid-out, bed and pillows were exceptionally comfortable. Nice bathroom with tub/shower combo; believe all other floors are shower only. On weekends I could hear a bit of bass coming from the rooftop bar two floors above, but it didn't prevent us from getting to sleep. THE NEIGHBOURHOOD: On the Lower East Side in Chinatown/The Bowery near the border of Little Italy. Since NYC's LIttle Italy keeps shrinking you'll see far more Chinese markets, shops and restos than Italian ones. Go to Brooklyn for Italian instead (Juliana's Pizza in DUMBO, 1 subway stop from hotel). Walk 15min in any direction and you'll hit Soho, Nolita, Tribeca, East Village, Tenement Musuem. Can't beat this location. To go further afield, walk 2 blocks to Grand St subway station (lines B&D) or 3-4 blocks to Canal St station for trains running uptown, further downtown, and to Brooklyn (lines 6, J, N, Q, R, Z, 4). OVERALL: Exeptional value, I can't think of a time I've gotten more value per dollar spent. Wonderful hotel in a great jumping-off-point for your NYC adventures.
