“Good location and friendly staff”

Good location near Madison Square Park with easy access to several subway lines. Staff was friendly at all times. Room was small, but adequate.We had a suite with a balcony. Unfortunately, the door to the balcony had a defective lock and could not be opened. This was brought to the attention of the front desk immediately after check-in. We were told it would be addressed while we were out for the day. It wasn't. We brought it to the attention of the night staff (Robert), who came up to the room to examine the door for himself. He told us that it would be repaired the next day. He also gave us breakfast vouchers for the inconvenience. Upon our return to the room the following night, we found that nothing had been done nor had any message been left. As we were checking out the following day, we didn't say anything to the staff that night.On our final morning we used the breakfast vouchers for the adjoining restaurant. That was a terrible experience. The person at the reception couldn't be bothered to look up from his texting. He pointed at the food and the tables and left us on our own. Just a pathetic offering with plastic flatware and paper towels. Not paper napkins, but the rough paper towels you find in public restrooms. Exactly zero service at the table to clear dishes or offer beverages. I know that the restaurant and the hotel are separate businesses, but a meal at the restaurant was offered as compensation for a deficiency of the hotel. They would have been better off offering nothing at all.At checkout, the issues of the balcony door and the poor service at the restaurant were brought to the attention of the front desk staff. They apologized and confirmed my e-mail address, saying that I would receive a message from management soon. As it is now five full days since checkout, I can only assume that I will not be hearing from the hotel.In short, the hotel was adequate given the price and location. There are plenty of choices in the neighborhood (the Hilton Garden Inn on 28th, for example, is much a much better hotel in the same price range) and we won't be returning to the Wyndham Chelsea West.
