Fort San Cristobal
Castillo de San Cristóbal is the largest fortification built by the Spanish in the New World. When it was finished in 1783, it covered about 27 acres of land, basically wrapping the city of San Juan. Today it's a wonderful historic site to explore.
Fort San Felipe del Morrow
This 16th-century citadel lies on the northwestern-most point of the islet of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Named in honor of King Philip II of Spain, the fort, also referred to as "El Morro" or "promontory," was designed to guard the entrance to San Juan Bay and defend the city of San Juan from seaborne enemies.
Island of Culebra
Located about 19 miles east of Puerto Rico, the island is seven miles long and three miles wide. Culebra municipality is under the domain of Puerto Rico, which has been under the protection of the United States. Visit the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge established 1909. Tours are available.
Historic Lighthouses
There are more than a dozen lighthouses on the island. Many of them are restored and some are even operational today. All were built in the 19th century; the earliest was erected back in 1882, and only a few sites are in ruins today.
