“Keeping up appearances?”

We had anticipated a hotel with in room dining available and a restaurant open until 10pm, or so the online advertising and in-room literature said. We also expected, given the Wyndham name, a moderately upscale facility and rooms. What we found did not match what we'd been led to believe, nor the price we paid based on that belief.While this is not a bad property, we were not happy to discover that in-room dining was not available, and the restaurant was closed long before we arrived that evening - well before the advertised hours. ("You'll have to walk down to the bar and see if they can get you anything, or else order in a Pizza from the place down the street" said the Desk Clerk.) Major negative.Also, the hotel was understaffed and seemingly poorly trained (as per the above mentioned exchange with the same Desk Clerk) - we arrived at about 8:00pm and had to wait almost 10 minutes for a desk clerk to show up so that we could check in (the one clerk on duty was apparently busy trying to print a fax for another customer).We also found that while the attendant in the Hotel's restaurant at breakfast was a nice person, and certainly tried to be helpful, he was not entirely sure of what was going on (like, how to make coffee) and had to run out of the room to "find the cook" whenever someone wanted a dish other than what was on the self serve buffet.Finally, our room was clean, but definitely needed updating, and there were signs that deeper maintenance (like the rotted and sagging wall unit mount) might be needed. The wall unit that provided heat was also extremely noisy, and we did find a few ants wandering around when we first got into the room.All in all, we got the impression of a hotel that is struggling to maintain appearances, but is understaffed, may have had a recent major staff turnover or difficulty retaining staff, and may also have deferred maintenance issues. Although we pass through this area from time to time, we will not be staying at this hotel again unless future reviews indicate these issues have been addressed.
