“The Mills House - Charleston”

  , Charlotte, North Carolina
I have stayed at the Mills House many times, but this visit was the best. The renovation was very nice and the service was excellent. The cute guys at the bell stand were helpful and friendly. I chose to self-park to save a little money. The convenient parking deck is attached to the hotel. Charleston parking is pretty expensive as a rule. This property has some challenges. The Queen St. side is noisy in the early morning due to deliveries and trash pick-up. The centrally located rooms must deal with an old HVAC/ mechanical hum 24/7. I wish I were one of those people who did not notice things like that! I requested a different room and was happily accommodated by Mike at the front desk. My new room had the best view I've ever had in Charleston over many years! It was cool, very quiet and the bedding was perfect. A nice heavy cotton blanket was available to add to the bed.The room was traditional while a little sparsely decorated, but the view from the bridge to the battery satisfied my visual interests. The bathroom had been upgraded since my last visit with granite and moderate modern fixtures. It was average size with pretty good bath products. There was no mini-bar but an addition of late night room service had been added. (Only till 10pm I think). There was no safe in the room. Starbucks was available from silver servers in the lobby in the morning, but there's no continental breakfast. There was a room option with "breakfast included", but who needs a full breakfast in Charleston. There were a couple places within walking distance to grab something on the go. (I got a huge piece of banana bread at the counter at Toast for $3.) The bar and terrace were very inviting, the food was good (lunch and snack) and they were not too crowded - a welcome respite in a busy city. (1 local beer was $8) The pool was very small, packed with "fun" children, but most hotels in town don't have pools at all. (The word on the street is... some non-guests may hang out at that pool. Hmm.) As fate would have it, a hurricane blew in without much warning. I decided to leave a day early to avoid the storm. Again, Mike at the front desk accommodated my request, no questions asked, and no fees. I did ask a day in advance, though. Storms are very common, so I'm sure they have parameters that must be honored. I will be back with my Wyndham Rewards and will ask for the same room! Some of the best restaurants in town are within walking distance!
