“Great getaway at Mills House Wyndham”

  , Garland
Took advantage of their Sizzling Summer Sale and enjoyed a terrific overnight in historic Charleston at Mills House Wyndham that included a well-appointed, comfortable room and complementary breakfast for two in the West Indies-themed Barbadoes Room hotel restaurant for $135. Right on Meeting Street in the heart of the historic district, walking distance to many sights and great restaurants (we liked Poogan's Porch right around the corner for Lowcountry specialties, but Husk and 82 Queen Street were next-door contenders). Also free DASH city trolley stop down the block can take you all over the area. All Mills House staff we had encounters with were friendly, courteous and helpful. Front desk gave us a couple of choices on our room location, allowing us to opt out of a room near the elevator. Our room looked out over the city to the bay. If looking for hip urban styling, this is not your hotel--decor was classic Victorian/plantation house. At Charleston Museum, was interested to see a photo of Mills House standing amid post-Civil War destruction: it was built as a hotel in 1853! Historic but up-to-date, we thought it a convenient, classy stay for the price. In cooler weather, would've loved to enjoy the street level patio dining outside Barbadoes. Pool and pretty terrace a nice consolation, though. Good to know: downtown Charleston parking always at a premium. Choices for parking are valet or self-park in county parking garage behind Mills House for $2 per hour up to $20 per 24 hours, limit 72 hours (longer with notice). Park on 4th level for bridge to Mills House 2nd level.
