Afrika Museum
Opened 13th of May 2009: The purpose of the Afrika Museum is to establish a link with the African history for those Surinamese people who are descendants of people from Afrika.

The Mosque and Neveh Shalom Synagogue
The mosque is located in the Keizerstraat, adjacent to the Neveh Shalom Synagogue. The Neveh Shalom Synagogue is the only synagogue of the Ashkenazi community in Suriname.

National Historic Museum Fort Zeelandia
Fort Zeelandia Museum houses an exhibit on the history of Paramaribo.

The Saint Petrus en Paulus Kathedraal
The world's biggest wooden Cathedral built between 1883 and 1885. Recently renovated, it is now open to tourists and for the celebration of Catholic mass.

The Thalia Theatre
This theatre is 173 years old as of April 2010 and still has a great variety of multi-cultural plays, national and international ballet performances and storytelling comedy shows.

Points of Interest

Independence Square
A good example of good urban planning, the square is the site of some government ministries housed in centuries-old buildings which have been renovated. On early Sunday mornings, song birds in cages are displayed on the square and sold for as much as hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Numismatic Museum at the Central Bank of Suriname
The Numismatic Museum displays a collection of coins and banknotes dating from the beginning of the West Indian Company to present day.

Palmentuin or Palm Garden
The only public park in the city, this is the garden of 1,000 palm trees, a silent witness to the early life of Amerindians centuries ago. Now a place to stroll and where festivals and picnics are held.

Paramaribo Zoo
Home to almost 300 animal species of the Amazon forests. On Sundays there are special activities for families and children.

The Waterkant or the Waterfront

Local Events

• 31st of December: Pagara Parade, announced one of the best New Year's eve destinations by CNN. The beautiful historical inner city comes alive with fireworks and bands playing on flatbeds to welcome the New Year.
• 1st of January: New Year's Day in Suriname is celebrated on 1st January each year. Suriname people celebrate the New Year with lots of drinks, music and fireworks.
• Holi Phagwa: Holi also called the Festival of Colours is a popular Hindu spring festival mostly celebrated on the streets and parks
• Labour Day: The Labour Day of Suriname is celebrated on 1st May each year. May 1 is also considered as the Workers' Day by almost all the nations of the world.
• Abolition of Slavery Day: The Abolition of Slavery Day of Suriname is celebrated on 1st July. In the first half of the 18th century, agriculture flourished in Suriname. African slaves did most of the work on the plantations. Suriname was occupied by the British in 1799 after the Netherlands were incorporated by France, and was returned to the Dutch in 1816, after the defeat of Napoleon. Women played an important role in the abolition of slavery, although they themselves lacked even the right to vote.
• Independence Day, celebrated on the 25th of November: The whole country gathers in public places around bonfires and listens to speeches about the independence of the country. Suriname celebrates the Independence Day mainly in the Paramaribo Palace, a grand colonial era building fronted by the Independence Square. On this day, colorful flags are raised on public buildings and private houses.
• Divali: celebrated in October or November, depending on the Hindu lunar calender. When the nights get longer and colder- by the new moon in the month Kartik(October/November) this holiday is celebrated by the Hindus. Traditionally it's known as the Festival of Lights.
