Within walking distance of many Galveston, Texas attractions, The Tremont House, a Wyndham Grand Hotel, occupies a former warehouse from 1879 that blends the best of yesterday and today to create absolutely timeless comfort. The original Tremont House opened in 1839 and for years it was the largest and finest hotel in the Republic of Texas. Famous guests included Sam Houston, Ulysses S. Grant, Clara Barton, and Buffalo Bill. The second Tremont Hotel which opened in 1872 and attracted dignitaries from around the world was demolished in 1928. The legendary hotel rose again in 1985 when George and the late Cynthia Mitchell transformed the Leon and H. Blum Building into the third incarnation of The Tremont House.
