“Long Weekend in Galveston”

  , Quincy
As usual I researched for hours online before choosing the Hotel Galvez & Spa in Galveston. Great choice in the end! The hotel is over 100 years old, very stately and beautiful. The lobby is gorgeous with lots of comfy chairs and couches to sit and watch people coming and going. There was a pianist in the lobby on the baby grand for two evenings. What a treat. The heated pool was deserted on MLK weekend although the hotel was full so I had it all to myself - bright blue sky and a flock of pelicans flew over while floating along. The room was perfect for 3 people. I had asked for a roll-away cot, and instead was upgraded to a 1 King bedroom with a separate living area with pull out couch! What a pleasant surprise. I am grateful to whomever arranged that for us. The only tiny downside was that we were in the room adjacent to the elevator and every time the elevator arrived at our floor, the "ding" could be heard loud and clear in the living/tv area with the pull out couch. Perhaps they could adjust the volume? But we adapted and it was no big deal. If that may be an issue for you, just ask to be away from the elevator. Both Front Desk and wait staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was delicious and the homemade pastries melt in your mouth! I really have no complaints whatsoever and would highly recommend this hotel and if we ever get back to Galveston we will definitely stay there. Set back across from the seawall with a palm-lined driveway, it was a great location. Five minute walk to Bubba Gump's Restaurant out on a pier, and the same distance from Saltgrass Steakhouse if you are looking to eat out. Both are family friendly. One morning we drove to The Gumbo Diner...5 minute drive and had homemade beignets - out of this world - along with other yummy typical southern eats. Here's a tip from the locals: If you have a car (or a bike), there is a free (yes FREE) car ferry at the end of Ferry Road that goes over to Bolivar Peninsula. During the 15 minute crossing you can get out of your car and look for dolphins, cruise ships and tankers. Really worth doing! Our last day there, after checking out, we took 3 complimentary bikes from the hotel and rode along the water for about an hour - 70 degrees, sunny and warm. That night we were back in Boston to below 30...
