Catalinita Island
Daily snorkel trips leave at 8:30am in front of the Viva Wyndham Diving store. The fast boat ensures a safe and comfortable 45-minute ride. You will arrive in "Canal de Catuano," which divides Saona Island from the Dominican Republic. Forty minutes of snorkeling in Cayo Raton, thirty minutes visiting the very wild Catalinita Island, and then we stop the boat on the top of the small Sand Island, where we can taste fresh tropical fruit. Before returning to the hotel beach, we'll visit the "Sea Star" place, where you can watch the biggest sea stars you have ever seen! Return about 1:00pm.
Catalina Island
Daily snorkel trips leave at 8:30am in front of the Viva Diving store. The fast boats ensure a safe and comfortable 25-minute ride. You will reach the Catalina reef, where the wonders of the Caribbean Sea are at a depth between 6/12ft 2/4m.
You will snorkel for about 30 minutes. Afterwards you will move to the west side of the island for a different snorkeling place and/or relax and enjoy the beautiful Catalina beach.
Return time is around lunchtime (12:30pm) You must have a reservation. The meeting place is at the Viva Wyndham Diving store at 8:25am. Here you will receive your snorkeling equipment and be given a snorkeling trip briefing. The price of US $25 per person includes boat trip and snorkeling equipment.
Marine life
All the dive sites are populated with angelfish, butterfly fish and all kinds of colored fish you can find in the Caribbean Sea, with brain coral, soft coral and sea fans. Frequently seen: sea turtles, horse eye jacks, tarpons, green and spotted morays, spotted eagle rays and sting rays as nurse shark. Less frequently seen but not impossible to find, especially in the winter months, are manatee and whale sharks and other kind of sharks such as black tip sharks and bull sharks.
Ancla
30ft/9m - This reef is a flat garden in front of Viva Wyndham Dominicus, with many types of coral and sponges. An ancient anchor 12-15ft/4-5m long lies on this reef concealed from a small garden of coral. This is a shore dive; also perfect for a night dive.
Parque, Casa Estrella, Aquario, Anguillas Paradise
40ft/12m - These four shallow reefs are found in front of "Parque Nacional del Este". Here you will find a large variety of coral, soft coral, sponges and sea fans. You can also find barracudas, Nassau groupers, spotted eels, green moray, spotted stingrays, angel fishes, star fishes and porcupine fish. Perfect for beginners or novice divers.
Catalina Garden
47ft/14m - This shallow reef, with a drop of 3-10ft 1-3m, is on the west side of Catalina island, you will find many different sizes of brain coral, soft coral and small canyons, large schools of fish as well as spiny lobsters and stingrays. Moray eels are also common. This is a great place for beginners or for the second dive.
Parque 2, El Tiburon
47-50ft/14-15m - This sandy area between a small coral wall is filled with huge schools of fish. Also found are soft coral, sea fan, brain coral, many kind of colored fish, barracudas and eels. This is a very good place for the second dive of the day.
Quasimilla, El Faro
54ft/16m - This beautiful reef is a flat garden with many types of coral and sponges. The abundance of sponges has created a perfect environment for turtles and lobsters. At certain times of the year, it is also possible to see huge schools of jack fish and snapper, barracudas and other large fish. This dive site is a light current dive.
Altagracia, Parguera, Saona Canal
60ft/18m - This deep reef contains some of the most spectacular coral, soft coral and sea fans in the area. It is also possible to see sharks, turtles and other larger
marine life. This is a current dive.
Tortuga
70ft/20m - This beautiful reef is a flat garden with many types of coral and sponges, easy-to-see turtles and lobsters. It is also possible to see huge schools of jack fish and snappers, barracudas and other large fish. This dive is a light current dive.
Bajo de la Mina
60-100ft/18-30m - This reef is located in front of La Romana, on the way to Catalina Island. Explore green and black coral and huge sponges of many different colors, easy-to-find green moray eels, turtles, grouper and reef sharks. This dive is for expert divers.
Catalina Canyon, Catalina Wall
100ft/30m - This wall lies at 15ft/5m and features beautiful green and black coral and huge sponges. It is also possible to see sharks, turtle and moray eels. The abundance of sponges, sea fans and soft coral has created a perfect environment for schools of colored fish, such as angelfish, butterfly fish and pork fish; barracudas, groupers and horse eye jacks are also common.
Ship Wrecks
Coca's wreck
60ft/18m - This recreational shipwreck lies at 60ft/18m deep. It is a 47ft/14m private yacht sunk by the Narcotic Coast Police during a fight in 1994. Divers can explore the boat from outside. Over the years, it has become the home to grouper, eel and small gardens of coral. In the area, it is easy to see barracuda and lobsters. The position of the boat makes this dive suitable for every diver.
The St. George
She lies at 135ft/44m. This wreck is a 240ft/80m cargo ship. In 1998, it was deeply damaged by Hurricane George and sunk in front of Viva Wyndham Dominicus in 1999, creating an artificial reef. The dive conditions and the depth of the shipwreck make this dive suitable for advanced divers. Divers certified "wreck diver" can explore the rooms of this former cargo ship to see the many delights a shipwreck has to offer. You will be diving with a full wreck-certified guide in a small group with a maximum of four divers.
Saona Island
Discover the Dominican Republic's untouched island! Viva Wyndham Diving organizes dive trips to "Saona Island." The day starts at 8.30am in our Dive Center. From here our fast and comfortable boat will take you to the first dive of the day - usually a dive in Parguera, with a depth range between 60/70ft 18/20m. The second dive will usually be a shallow dive (around 40/54ft 12/16m). The surface interval (30-40 minutes) is spent onboard the boat. A professional divemaster or instructor will show you the best of two reefs in one of the most renowned dive destinations in the Dominican Republic. Return time is around 12:30pm.
The temperature of the water is between 76°/80°F, 25°/27°C from November to March and from 80°/85°F, 27°/29°C between April and October. The average visibility is between 60/100ft 18/30m.
